GEOGRAPHY-CLASS-2-21/06/2021

 Today in the 2nd geography class two questions related to the concepts taught in the last class were discussed;

1)A world test championship final was to be held between India and New Zealand at the rose bowl, Southampton, England at 9:30 A.M. The position of Southampton is 0*Longitude, in that case, calculate the time, the viewers in Chennai have to tune their television to watch the Test match?

A)09:30 A.M

B)12:30 P.M

C)03:30 P.M

D)03:00 P.M

ANS: Option D

2)A flight is going to take off from Coimbatore on Monday at 6 P.M, After 11.30 hours of travel, reaches its destination New York(90*W). What will be the exact time and day in New York, While the flights lands there?

A)Monday, 6.30 A.M

B)Tuesday, 6.00 P.M

C)Monday, 6.00 P.M

D)Tuesday, 5.30 A.M

ANS:Option C

EARTH MOVEMENTS:

Rotation:

  • Earth is tilted 23* 1/2'
  • Rotational movement causes day and night variations
  • Earth rotates in the west to east direction
  • Rotational velocity is maximum at the equator(1670 km/hr) and minimum at poles(0 km/hr)
  • Time taken for one rotation is 23hrs 56min 4.09sec
  • Rotation of earth leads to Coriolis force on moving objects.
Coriolis effect:
  • G.G. Coriolis found this in 1835
  • Rotation of the earth affects the moving objects
  • In Northern hemisphere-> right
  • In the Southern hemisphere->left

Why rocket launching sites of the world are present near to equator and also on the east coast?

ANS: at the equator due to high velocity of earth's rotation and low gravitational force satellites can easily escape from the gravity thus minimizing fuel usage and if there is a case of failure of mission the rocket will fall back into sea when launched from eastern coast.

Sathish Dhawan Space Center established on (10th Oct 1971) , Sriharikota(SDSC)

Thumba equatorial rocket launching station(TERLS)-21 Nov 1963

First three satellites of India:

  1. Aryabhata-19/04/1975
  2. Bhaskara-07/06/1979
  3. Rohini-10/08/1979

Ariane Space Centre, French Guyana,1980.

Revolution:

  • Revolution speed-30 km/s[bullet -9km/s]
  • Time taken for one revolution-365 and 1/4 days
  • Earth revolution around the sun determines the season
  • Jan 3,Perihelion(147 million kms) ->sun comes near to the earth in winter season
  • July 4,Aphelion(153 million kms)

Seasons:
  • Summer -June 21/22-summer solstice
  • Autumn-Sep 22/23-equinox
  • Winter-Dec 21/22-winter solstice
  • Spring-Mar 20/21-vernal equinox

For every 1*latitudes between tropic of cancer and tropic of capricorn sun stays for 4 days.

QUE 1:Variations in length of day time and night time fram season to season are due to

A)The earth's rotation on it's axis

B)The earth's revolution round the sun in an elliptical manner

C)Latitudinal position of the place

D)Revolution of the earth on tilted axis

ANS:Option D

QUE 2:

Factors responsible for changing of seasons

     1. Rotation of earth

     2. Tilt of earth

3.Revolution of the earth around the sun

Select the correct answer using given codes:

A)1 only

B)1&2 only

C)2&3 only

D)1,2&3

ANS: Option D

Heat zones of the earth:

  1. Torrid zone-23*N-23*S
  • Temerature very high because of sun rays are vertical in this region and also sun overhead these regions atleast once during a year
   2.Temperate zone-23*N/23*S-66*N/66*S
  • Moderate temperature

   3.Frigid zone-66*N/66*S-North pole/South pole

  • very cool because sun rays are slanting

QUE 3:On 21st june ,the sun

A)does not set below the horizon at the arctic circle

B)does not set below the horizon at antarctic circle

C)shines vertically overhead at noon at the equator

D)shines vertically overhead at the tropic of capricorn

ANS:Option A.
