Myanmar military coup:
Myanmar:
- Formerly known as Burma. Capital - Naypyitaw. Located in South East Asia (one of the eight countries in SAARC). Border sharing countries - Thailand, India, China, Bangladesh, and Laos. Most people follow Buddhism.
- Became independent in 1948 - Burmese military played a significant role.
Aung San Suu Kyi:
- Aung San Suu Kyi is the daughter of Myanmar's independence hero, General Aung San. She spent nearly 15 years in detention between 1989 and 2010. Her struggle to bring democracy to then military-ruled Myanmar made her an international symbol of peaceful resistance in the face of oppression.
- In 1991, Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize while still under house arrest and hailed as "an outstanding example of the power of the powerless".
- In 2015, she led her National League for Democracy (NLD) to victory in Myanmar's first openly contested election in 25 years. But in 2021, the military took control and arrested her due to the issue of contesting the election in 2020. Hence, the military decided to be in power till 2023.
Rohingya crisis in Myanmar:
- Rohingya's origin is from Bangladesh.
- They are the Muslim minority (in terms of population) residing in the Northern parts of the Rakhine region in Myanmar.
- They are one of the most persecuted communities in the world. Reason: Ethnic conflict.
- Rakhine region is the least developed region in Myanmar.
- Myanmar government being a predominantly Buddhist community, denied the Rohingya citizenship.
- In 2017 Rohingya militants attacked police forces. Myanmar forces retaliated, causing Rohingya communities to migrate to countries like India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
- Similar to Rakhine, the least developed region in India is the North-Eastern region. In China, the least developed region is the Xinjiang province. These regions are under-developed because of the ethnic conflicts in that region.
Important Acts, Events and Policies in India:
LPG reforms - 1991 (L- Liberalization, P - Privatization, G - Globalization). Initiated by former Prime Minister P.V Narasimha Rao and then-Finance Minister Manmohan Singh. The policy intended to increase the economic growth rate and to build sufficient foreign exchange reserves.
RTI (Right To Information) Act - 2005 - initiated to bring accountability and transparency in the Government.
MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) - 2005 - Right to Work:
- Employs workers to preserve natural resources. (Employment opportunities as well as preservation of natural resources).
- Benefitted in pandemic time, as the urban population moved to rural areas. One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme benefitted the migrant workers.

- Founded on 31 December 2008, after the Mumbai attack on 28 November 2008 at the Taj Mahal Palace.
